      This is a mixture of things: nature versus nurture. Nature is mainly genetics. Nurture includes upbringing and the environment the child is brought up in such as a stimulating environment that allows the child to explore. Nutrition also plays a role in cognitive ( brain) development as malnourished children have been shown to have impaired cognitive function
